Florida insurance carriers are dropping policies on roofs they consider too old. The 5-Year Recertification is the document package that lets you fight back — signed, dated, photographed and built to the format Citizens (and most private carriers) actually accept.
The pain — FL Statute 627.7011(5)
- Insurers cannot deny coverage solely on age if your roof is under 15 years.
- At 15 years, your insurer may require an inspection at your expense.
- If that inspection finds less than 5 years of useful life, your policy can be non-renewed or denied.
- A current, signed recertification gives you ammunition to push back — or to renew on your own terms.
The fix — what Sarge does
Sarge personally walks the roof, performs the maintenance-scope repairs, takes the photo documentation, fills out the Citizens RCF-1 form, and hands you a complete bundle your insurer will accept.
On qualifying asphalt shingle roofs, the physical work may include Roof Refresh low-pressure cleaning and bio-based shingle rejuvenation before the final documentation is signed. Cleaning makes the roof readable; rejuvenation may help restore flexibility and granule adhesion; the certification still depends on the actual roof condition.

Who qualifies
Most roofs 15 years and under in reasonable condition (~90–95% of roofs Sarge inspects). Tile roofs, metal roofs and many asphalt roofs in serviceable condition qualify. A 2011 asphalt shingle roof may still have a path if the deck is sound, granule loss is not widespread, and the roof responds well to cleaning, repairs and rejuvenation.
Who doesn't qualify
Roofs with widespread granule loss, multiple layers of decking failure, structural damage, or end-of-life manufacturer dates. Sarge tells you straight on the inspection — if the roof can't be honestly recertified, he won't take your money. Replacement becomes the conversation instead.
The Sarge promise
Sarge doesn't certify a roof he wouldn't stand behind. If a roof qualifies, you get the bundle. If it doesn't, you get the honest conversation and the replacement quote — no in-between, no fluff certifications a carrier will tear up.

5-Year Recertification FAQ
Straight answers on the 5-Year Roof Recertification program.
How much does roof recertification cost in Florida?
The recertification path is designed for asphalt shingle roofs in Marion, Lake, Sumter, or Citrus County that still have useful life left. Sarge walks the roof, performs maintenance-scope repairs, photographs the condition, and delivers the completed Citizens RCF-1 document package. Pricing is confirmed after the free inspection. Call (352) 696-8989 for your quote.
Will my carrier accept the recertification?
Yes for Citizens and most private carriers in Florida. The package uses the official Citizens RCF-1 (03 25) form which private carriers also recognize under FL Statute 627.7011(5).
Does recertification extend my roof warranty?
No. Recertification documents 5 years of remaining useful life for your carrier. It is not a manufacturer warranty extension. It is a carrier-facing inspection and repair package.
What if my roof does not qualify for recertification?
Sarge tells you straight up and gives you a replacement quote instead. No upsell games. If the roof has less than 5 years of useful life, recertification is not honest — replacement is the right call.
How long does the process take?
Inspection takes 2 hours on site. Repairs and document package are typically completed within 5-7 business days, depending on weather and repair scope.
Do you recertify roofs older than 20 years?
Case by case. Most roofs over 20 years do not qualify. Sarge will not put his license on a roof that cannot honestly carry 5 more years.
